Artist's Statement
For years I have loved painting in transparent watercolor. My work now includes other water-based media and collage for the variety of experimental techniques possible with them. Currently, I'm exploring basic art elements - color, texture, opacity, shape, line - by painting without preliminary drawing or predetermined subject. It is instead an intuitive process. This may result in a non-objective image concerned purely with the relationship of such elements or it may produce a painting obviously echoing the natural world (an abstracted landscape perhaps). The painter Maxine Masterfield writes, "The representational artist is convinced that what is seen through the eyes is the reality, while the abstract naturalist senses that the reality lies less in the surface appearance than in how nature is experienced."My ideal is a painting that draws someone to look again and discover, perhaps in a detail not seen before, a moment of harmony, energy, beauty.
